Olives, the lobby bar peering out onto Union Square North, has been our favorite New York hotel bar for years. With its spacious layout and comfortable couches, we’ve maneuvered our friends and family for quick stops – ‘just a drink’ only to stay for hours. The rooms are as lovely as the lobby, large by New York standards, with bathrooms as big as a designer kitchen. We loved the chocolate on our pillows for turndown service and the delicious Caesar promptly dispatched to our room.

Olives – W Union Square New York. Slide in here the way you would your own living room or the library at your old college. We love the central location perched in Union Square (up, right), close enough to the train to work as a meeting point for friends but far enough from the vendors selling organic honey sticks. Order liberally from the appetizers menu Ð we assure satisfaction.

Cipriani Dolci – Grand Central Station: We’re deeply smitten with Grand Central Station and the gorgeous Main Concourse. Our favorite stops at GC include the Transit Museum Store and the subterranean mezzanine food hall, but our top scenario to wind away an hour is over a martini (Ketel, twist) at this lovely bar overlooking an afternoon’s worth of transportation logistics.
